ELMA, Wash. — A tense standoff in rural Elma on Wednesday afternoon ended with a 13-year-old juvenile in custody after authorities say he threatened family members, armed himself with multiple weapons, and fired arrows toward responding law enforcement officers.

According to the Grays Harbor County Sheriff's Office, deputies were dispatched at approximately 2:25 p.m. on July 29 after receiving a report that an autistic 13-year-old was out of control inside a residence. The reporting party told dispatch the juvenile was striking doors and walls with an axe and had threatened to break into a household safe to retrieve a firearm.

Family members were able to safely evacuate the home before deputies arrived.

Deputies from the Grays Harbor County Sheriff's Office, along with officers from the Elma Police Department, responded to the scene. Upon arrival, law enforcement established a perimeter and began negotiating with the juvenile, who remained inside the residence and was believed to be armed with an axe. During the incident, the juvenile also armed himself with a bow and arrows.

As negotiations continued, the juvenile exited the residence and pointed the bow and arrow at responding officers and deputies. Authorities continued their efforts to peacefully resolve the situation.

Additional assistance was provided by the Aberdeen Police Department, Montesano Police Department, and the Washington State Patrol.

Investigators say the juvenile then fired multiple arrows in the direction of officers and deputies, as well as at a police drone that was being used during the incident. During the confrontation, one officer discharged a single round from his service weapon but did not strike the juvenile.

After several more minutes of negotiations, law enforcement deployed less-lethal munitions, successfully striking the juvenile and bringing the incident to a safe conclusion. The juvenile surrendered and was taken into custody with minor injuries before being transported to a local hospital for evaluation.

Following his release from the hospital, the juvenile is expected to be booked into the Grays Harbor County Juvenile Detention Center on multiple counts of first-degree assault.

Because an officer discharged a firearm during the incident, the Grays Harbor County Sheriff's Office has requested the Region 3 Critical Incident Investigation Team, led by the Thurston County Sheriff's Office, to conduct an independent investigation.

The Sheriff's Office thanked the Elma, Aberdeen, and Montesano police departments, the Washington State Patrol, and all responding personnel for their assistance during what officials described as a rapidly evolving and dangerous situation.

Authorities also expressed appreciation that no officers, family members, or members of the public suffered serious injuries and apologized to nearby residents who were temporarily displaced while law enforcement worked to safely resolve the incident.
