ELMA, Wash. — The Elma School District is implementing new security and admission procedures for athletic events following what district officials described as a series of troubling incidents at a recent game.

In a statement released Monday, September 14, the district said the changes take effect immediately and are intended to improve safety for students, staff and community members attending school events.

According to the district, the EHS principal was maced by a student during a game. The district says Elma School District has a zero-tolerance policy for weapons, and that full police charges are being pursued.

Officials also said visiting fans at the game were wearing face coverings for identity concealment. Under the new rules, that will no longer be allowed, and faces must remain visible to gain admission to games.

New Clear Bag Policy

Effective immediately, fans will be required to follow a clear bag policy. Permitted items include clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bags no larger than 12" x 6" x 12", one-gallon clear plastic freezer bags, and small clutch bags no larger than 4.5" x 6.5".

Medically necessary items, seat cushions with zippers that may be searched, umbrellas that are permitted as long as they do not obstruct other spectators' views, and similar approved items may also be allowed.

The district says prohibited items include weapons, projectiles such as pepper spray, pepper gels and TASER devices, alcohol and drugs, poles or sticks that could be used as weapons, oversized bags placed inside acceptable clear bags, and noisemakers such as cowbells or horns. Staff will also have discretion to prohibit other items considered dangerous or disruptive.

New Rules for Student Admission

The district is also changing admission requirements for students.

High school students must either be accompanied by an adult, present their EHS ASB identification, or present a visiting school's student ID. For the Friday, September 18 game, students may present either their ASB card or a receipt showing purchase of an ASB card.

Middle school and elementary school students must be accompanied by an adult.

District officials said the procedures are being implemented "out of an abundance of caution" and will be reviewed by the Elma School Board over the next several weeks to determine their effectiveness.

The district says its goal is to support the safety and security of students, staff and the community while continuing to provide a fun and welcoming environment at school events.
